Our fire department, also known as Island County Fire District #1, serves the entire geographical region known as Camano Island in Washington State. Although we are located on an island, we are connected to the mainland by a bridge. Just over the bridge is the City of Stanwood in Snohomish County. We cover 43 square miles with 52 miles of shoreline.
On January 1, 2006, The City of Stanwood signed an interlocal agreement with Camano Island Fire and Rescue to manage its fire department and to provide advanced life support response and transport to the residents of Stanwood City. Due to our partnership, both departments operate effectively as one.
Combined with The City of Stanwood, our team consists of 48 career firefighters and paramedic/firefighters, over 20 part-time firefighters, approximately 35 volunteer firefighters, and 11 career administrative and support employees. We are also fortunate to have a full-time maintenance team and fabrication shop. Two of our fire station are staffed with career firefighter paramedics and/or firefighter/EMT's 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have a total of five fire stations that are also staffed with volunteer and part-time firefighter/EMT's who are committed to responding to the community's needs.
As of 2008 our resident population is estimated at 18,000, with a population of an estimated 25,000 seasonally. In 2008 CIFR responded to 3,545 fire and medical calls, as well as technical rescue calls such as high-angle rescue and marine rescue. The City of
