Service Area

Our fire department, also known as Island County Fire District #1, serves the entire geographical region known as Camano Island in Washington State. Although we are located on an island, we are connected to the mainland by a bridge. Just over the bridge is the City of Stanwood in Snohomish County. We cover 43 square miles with 52 miles of shoreline.

Partnership with The City Of Stanwood

On January 1, 2006, The City of Stanwood signed an interlocal agreement with Camano Island Fire and Rescue to manage its fire department and to provide advanced life support response and transport to the residents of Stanwood City. Due  to our partnership, both departments operate effectively as one.

Staff & Stations

Combined with The City of Stanwood, our team consists of 35 career firefighters and paramedic/firefighters, 29 part-time firefighters, approximately 36 volunteer firefighters, and 10 career administrative and support employees. We are also fortunate to have a full-time maintenance team and fabrication shop. Three of our fire stations are staffed with career firefighter paramedics and/or firefighter/EMT's 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We have a total of five fire stations that are also staffed with volunteer and part-time firefighter/EMT's who are committed to responding to the community's needs.

Response Statistics

As of 2008 our resident population is estimated at 18,000, with a population of an estimated 25,000 seasonally. In 2008 CIFR responded to 3,545 fire and medical calls, as well as technical rescue calls such as high-angle rescue and marine rescue. The City of Stanwood responded to 1,521 calls.  More information can be found in our 2006 and 2007  House Bill 1756 reports.

Our Mission Statement

To work in partnership with the community and co-operating/co-responding agencies to prevent fires. To provide timely, efficient, appropriate, and safe response to operations at medical, fire, rescue, and hazardous materials emergencies, and public service incidents. To protect life, property, and the economic base of the community. To plan for/prepare for/mitigate natural disasters, and protect the environment from man made disasters. And to provide innovative and cost efficient operation to the taxpayers of the district while addressing the service needs of our patrons through caring, well trained, properly equipped, and highly motivated personnel.

Our Motto

A community resource dedicated to public service since 1945.
