Paramedic Firefighter

Lateral or Entry Level Firefighter/Paramedic

Camano Island Fire & Rescue, Island County Fire District 1, is establishing an Entry Level and Lateral Fire Fighter Paramedic list by December 31, 2008.  This hiring and eligibility list may be valid for up to 2 years.  Please visit http://www.nationaltestingnetwork.com/ to complete the online application process.

Minimum qualifications: 

  • High School diploma or G.E.D.
  • Must be a minimum of Twenty-one (21) years of age.
  • Must be a citizen of the United States of America.
  • Must be able to speak, read and write the English language and be able to communicate effectively with the public during emergencies, as well as when routinely addressing questions, complaints and requests from the public.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain by time of appointment, a valid Washington State drivers license without any record of suspension or revocation in any state.
  • Camano Island Fire and Rescue is a drug free, alcohol free, smoke free workplace. Firefighting personnel are not permitted to use any tobacco products during their employment with Camano Island Fire and Rescue. Applicants will be required to document that they have not used tobacco products for a period of one year or more prior to application date to be considered for employment.
  • Must be in excellent physical condition and must have passed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within the last year, prior to participating in the hiring process.
  • Must be able to successfully pass the fire district medical physical examination, a drug/alcohol test, and a psychological evaluation.
  • Must provide a copy of a Commercial Driver License (CDL) or provide proof of successful completion of Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention (EVAP/EVIP) training.  May be waived by the District Fire Chief, but successful applicant must obtain EVIP certification within ninety-days (90) of date of employment.
  • Must be willing to sign a waiver authorizing Camano Island Fire & Rescue to conduct a background investigation to include:  criminal history check and employment history verification.  Individuals with a history of felony convictions will not be considered.
  • Fire Academy graduate and/or certified as a Fire Fighter 1 as defined by NFPA 1001 is preferred, but not necessary.  Graduation from a Fire Academy and/or certified as a Fire Fighter 1 must be accomplished prior to the end of a candidates probation.
  • Must be certified as a Washington State or Nationally Certified Paramedic.  A copy of Washington State or National Paramedic certification is required. Candidates must obtain Washington State Paramedic Certification as defined in WAC 246-976010 of the Washington Administrative Code at time of probations end.
  • Lateral entry fire fighter paramedics may enter up to step 5 per the collective bargaining agreement, DOE. The collective bargaining agreement is currently in negotiations.
  • Salary range (2009 base salary):  $60,872 – $74,251 annually, DOE.  Plus a generous benefits package. 

Firefighter / Paramedic Exam

This test is to establish a hiring and eligibility list for the position of Entry or Lateral Level Fire Fighter Paramedic / Non-Exempt. 

Application Fee

Island County Fire District #1 does not charge an application fee. Applicable fees do apply per the individual testing agency's fee structures.
